Boarding school, in a lot of ways, is like family life. Students who live in the dorms get to know people on a deeper level. That happens through hanging out in a friend’s room after class, celebrating birthdays together, watching movies in the common room, and studying and praying together.
Kelly Gallegos, class of 2027, has a winning smile. When asked if she liked the boarding school experience, she said, “I love it. It’s like having a sleepover with friends every night.”
Of course, boarding school comes with responsibilities. Students set their own alarm to get up on time for school. They keep their rooms neat and do their own laundry. In many ways, it’s an entry into the routine of adult life.
Isabel Nguyen is the Girls’ Dorm Director. She says boarding school comes with a certain amount of independence, along with opportunities to make new friends.
She mentioned free time to hang out, jogging on the nature trails, various outings and activities, and decorating the dorm together for holidays.
"It’s like having a sleepover with friends every night.”
“The girls look out for each other, they help one another,” noticed Miss Nguyen. “I’ve seen that lead to life-long friendships.”
Chris Layug oversees the boys’ dorm. “The teenage years are a roller coaster ride, full of ups and downs,” he observes. “It’s natural for young people to begin to explore the world in its fullness. They’re trying to see how they fit in.”
Students often turn to Mr. Layug, who enjoys talking with the young men in his dorm. He said consistency, patience, and understanding are cornerstones to his approach. “Boys can be really crazy,” he admits. “So I have to learn how to adjust and work with them. I want the dorms to be a peaceful place at the end of a busy day.”
